Hi kind helpers
I'm just about to move to a swanky apartment a week or 2 before I go on holiday for 9 weeks to China and Vietnam, exciting times but heres the catch,
My son, who I trust 100% will be in the apartment whilst we are away. What I want is to set up some sort of camera so I can 'stay in contact' just to look at my new abode not having any partys or or people dossing there.
Just a single camera would be good, that I can log into whenever I can get on line. Wireless preferable but not essential. I'm well aware that google is my friend, but real advice on actual cameras would be much apreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hi Kingy,
If you're looking just to view images remotely then you have a number of options open to you.
All these cameras are wireless and provide footage at a maximum resolution of 640x480. They are also all very easy to set up.
I would recommend the Axis for it's H.264 video compression which gives you good quality footage over slow internet connections. Alternatively, the Panasonic, Y-cam and Vivotek have dedicated mobile phone browser support letting you monitor them directly from a mobile phone.

All look like what I need,
I have what may well be a stupid question, how do you connect to the camera remotely,
I'm guessing you enter the cameras IP address?
Do you need a static IP address?
Can you use something like DynDNS?
Thanks Dave |

Hi Kingy,
You can access remotely using a standard broadband internet connection. You need to set up port forwarding in your router.
You also don't need a static IP. There are dynamic DNS clients built into the cameras which provides you with a name that always corresponds to your current IP address. All you need to do is type in the name and you get back to your camera.

Thanks again Hyperdrinky
It all sounds too easy, open the box, plug it in, run the software and away you go
Going to go for the Axis, will report back on progress |

Just to note, Axis is simple to install, but if you do get stuck on what something does. On every page of the cameras setup there is a blue circle with a white "?" click on that, and it will explain the settings on that page. _________________ www.controlbynet.com

It was simple, around 20mins to get it working, maybe another 30mins to register, sort the DNS and port forwarding.
Thanks again for the help and advise. |
